Every trade show has a theme, and IFA 2026 — which ran 4–8 September at Berlin ExpoCenter City — had an unusually obvious one. Not Matter. Not Thread. Not another doorbell with a slightly wider lens.

It was the box. A big, hot, expensive box that sits in your home, runs a language model on its own silicon, and promises that nothing you say or record ever leaves the building.

Anker announced one called MindBase. UGREEN, a company most Singaporeans know for charging bricks and USB-C hubs, announced three, topping out at a twenty-thousand-US-dollar machine with an Nvidia Jetson Thor inside it. Both pitched the same story: your smart home is about to get a brain, and it should be your brain, in your flat, not a rented one in someone’s data centre.

It is a genuinely good story. I want it to be true. But before you put a deposit down, let’s talk about what was actually announced, what it costs once you convert it to SGD and land it in Singapore, and why I think almost everyone reading this should sit 2026 out.

What Anker actually announced

The Anker MindBase is a home hub built around an “AI Core” compute card rated at 26 TOPS, running a large language model Anker says it developed in-house. The software layer is called TrueSmart Agent, and it launches with two agents: a NAS agent and a security agent.

That second half matters more than the first. MindBase is also a network-attached storage box — Anker calls the storage layer EverSafe Memory — expandable to 48TB. The security agent’s job is to watch your eufy cameras, evaluate events on-device, and decide what is worth waking you up for, without uploading footage anywhere.

On compatibility, Anker is being sensible rather than imperial: MindBase is designed to sit alongside Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Home Assistant, not replace them. It’s meant to work with close to 100 Anker devices plus Matter-compatible gear from other brands. No monthly subscription.

The IFA announcement came with a wave of eufy hardware that does have prices: the TrackLight Cam S1, a Video Doorbell S4 at US$299.99 (about S$380) shipping late September, a Window Camera E10 at US$69.99 (about S$89) later this year, and an NVR Security System E50 starting at US$999 (about S$1,265). There’s a MindBase Security Kit bundle planned too.

And the MindBase itself? No price. No launch date. “Details will be announced at a later stage.”

What UGREEN actually announced

UGREEN went bigger, weirder, and considerably more expensive. Its HomeAgent line runs UGOS Pro, the company’s Linux-based OS, and comes in three tiers:

Yes, twenty thousand US dollars. For a smart home hub. I checked that number three times because I assumed it was a typo for a rack of them.

There’s an ecosystem attached — SynCare cameras, smart speakers, smart photo frames, and a voice assistant called Uliya. Matter is supported. ONVIF is supported at launch, which is the sensible bit: it means third-party cameras can feed the box.

Now the part everyone skims past. Thread support is planned, not shipped. Zigbee support is planned, not shipped. Pre-orders opened 3 September, a Kickstarter campaign follows on 27 October, and shipping is “expected in January” 2027.

So the pitch is: pay now, in USD, for a crowdfunded box, that ships in four months at the earliest, whose radio support for the two protocols your sensors actually use is a roadmap item.

The Singapore reality check

Let me lay out the specific problems, because they compound.

Nothing here ships to Singapore with local support. Neither of these is a retail product you can walk into Funan and buy. UGREEN’s is a crowdfunding campaign priced in USD; Anker’s isn’t priced at all. Add international shipping, 9% GST on import, and the fact that a Kickstarter fulfilment address in Singapore is a coin flip on customs handling, and your “US$899 early bird” is comfortably north of S$1,300 before anything arrives.

Warranty and RMA are a fiction at this distance. A 48TB NAS-class box that dies in month eight is not something you casually ship back to Shenzhen. Ask anyone who has tried to RMA crowdfunded hardware from here.

None of this will carry a Cybersecurity Label. CSA’s labelling scheme is voluntary and already thin on the ground — we went through why almost nothing in your HDB has a label — but a box that ingests every camera feed and every sensor event in your flat is precisely the category where you’d want independent assurance, and a first-generation crowdfunded hub is precisely where you won’t get it.

Thermals are not a joke here. These are NAS chassis with spinning disks and, in the MA100’s case, a Jetson Thor module. The standard HDB parking spot for a box like this is the store room or a kitchen cabinet — unventilated, uncooled, and ambient 30–32°C for most of the year. Drive temperatures that are fine in a Berlin flat are not fine in yours. If you buy one, it needs airflow and it probably needs to live in an air-conditioned room, which means it needs to be quiet, which nobody has demonstrated yet.

And the “planned Thread” thing genuinely disqualifies UGREEN for now. In a concrete HDB, the whole point of a modern hub is that it is a Thread border router extending a mesh through your walls — that’s the fight we covered in building a Matter mesh through concrete. A Matter controller that talks Wi-Fi only, with Thread and Zigbee promised later, is not a hub replacement. It’s a NAS with opinions.

What the AI actually does today (and it’s narrower than the marketing)

Here’s the thing I keep coming back to. Strip away the LLM language and look at the two shipping agents: storage and security.

The security agent is the real product. On-device event triage — deciding whether that motion at 2am is your neighbour’s cat, a delivery rider, or something worth an alert — is a legitimately good use of local inference. It’s the single most annoying failure mode of every camera system, and doing it locally means your footage never leaves the flat. That’s worth something.

The storage agent is a NAS with natural-language search. Useful, not revolutionary.

What neither company demonstrated is the thing the marketing implies: a home that reasons about itself. “Nobody’s been in the study for two hours and the aircon’s still running, so turn it off” does not need 2,070 TFLOPS. It needs a presence sensor and a five-line automation. I’ve written before about how much of the Gemini-for-Home style AI pitch is still ahead of the delivery, and the same caution applies with the compute moved indoors.

Deterministic automations remain better than probabilistic ones for anything that controls a physical thing in your home. You do not want an LLM deciding whether to unlock your door. You want an if-statement.

The alternative that already works, and costs a tenth as much

If what you actually want is local control, no cloud dependency, no subscription — that is a solved problem in Singapore in 2026, and it has been for a while.

Tier 1 — you just want your automations to survive an outage. An edge hub does this. The Aqara Hub M3 runs supported Aqara automations locally, acts as a Thread border router, speaks Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and IR, has PoE, and deliberately ships with no microphone and no camera. Tier 2 — you want a real local brain. Home Assistant. This is where you get the automation depth the AI hubs are gesturing at, and you get it now. Fair warning on pricing: the Home Assistant Green has gone from US$99 to US$199 — Nabu Casa raised it because RAM component costs nearly doubled. Even at S$250-ish landed, a Green does more genuinely useful work in an HDB than a S$1,140 crowdfunded hub that can’t talk Thread yet.

Tier 3 — you specifically want a local LLM. Then build it, don’t buy it. The 2026 community stack is Whisper for speech-to-text, Home Assistant Assist for intent handling, Ollama running a local model, and Piper for text-to-speech. The honest hardware requirement: roughly 8GB of GPU VRAM to run a 7–8B model fast enough to feel conversational. On a Raspberry Pi 5 you’re looking at 5–8 seconds per command, which is fine for “what’s the humidity in the bedroom” and infuriating for anything else.

A second-hand mini PC with a decent iGPU, or a used Mac mini, gets you there for well under S$1,000 — and unlike a crowdfunded appliance, you can repurpose it when you get bored. Add a Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition at US$69 (about S$89) as the microphone endpoint and you have the whole thing. We went deep on this in the local voice assistant guide.

Tier 4 — you want local camera AI specifically. This is the one area where the IFA boxes have a real argument, and it’s also the area where alternatives are most mature. So who should actually buy one?

I’ll be direct.

Buy the Anker MindBase — later, when it’s priced. If you’re already deep in eufy and you want local camera intelligence plus NAS in one box, this is a coherent product from a company that already has regional retail and service infrastructure. Wait for a price and a regional launch. There is no reason to be early.

Skip the UGREEN HomeAgent line for now. Not because the hardware is bad — the HA100 Pro and MA100 are serious machines — but because “Thread planned” plus “ships January 2027” plus “crowdfunded” plus “USD pricing with no SG channel” is four separate risks stacked on one purchase. Revisit when it’s a retail product with Thread shipping and someone in the region has reviewed it.

Nobody in a Singapore flat should buy the MA100. S$25,300, or S$12,650 early bird, for home automation. That is developer-kit money for a developer kit. If you have a use case that needs 2,070 TFLOPS at home you already know it, and you are not reading a buyer’s guide about it.

And one more thing worth remembering: a hub whose entire value is an in-house LLM and a proprietary agent platform is a hub whose value evaporates the day the vendor loses interest. We’ve watched this happen enough times that it deserves its own checklist — see how to avoid getting bricked. Ask what the box does after the company stops shipping agent updates. For MindBase, the answer is at least “it’s still a NAS.” For a S$25,000 MasterAgent, the answer is a very expensive paperweight with excellent thermals.

The verdict

Local AI in the home is the right direction. Processing camera events on-device instead of in someone’s cloud is straightforwardly better for privacy, latency and your monthly bill, and I’m glad two large companies are spending real money on it.

But IFA 2026 announced intentions, not products you can buy in Singapore. One has no price. The other has three prices, all in USD, none of which include the radios you need, and none of which ship before 2027.

Meanwhile the boring answer — an edge hub for local automations, Home Assistant if you want depth, a mini PC if you genuinely want a model in the loop — works today, costs a fraction, carries local warranty, and doesn’t ask you to fund a Kickstarter to find out whether Thread arrives.
