For about a decade, buying into Philips Hue meant accepting one non-negotiable condition: you played by Zigbee’s rules, and you bought the Bridge. That was the deal. In exchange you got the most reliable smart lighting on the market — but you also got a walled garden with a proprietary square hub sitting in the middle of it.
That deal is being quietly rewritten. In late June 2026, Signify (Hue’s parent company) confirmed that compatible Hue bulbs will soon run Zigbee and Matter-over-Thread at the same time, on the same bulb, via a firmware update landing later this year. Not “pick one at setup” — both, concurrently, as a router on both mesh networks.
If you live in an HDB flat with concrete walls eating your Thread mesh alive, this is a bigger deal than the headline suggests. But it also comes with a pile of asterisks that nobody is putting on the box. Let’s go through what’s actually happening, and what it means if you’re building or expanding a smart home in Singapore.
What Signify actually announced
The technical enabler is a partnership with Silicon Labs. Newer Hue products ship with Silicon Labs’ MG26 and SiMG301 wireless SoCs, which support Concurrent Multiprotocol (CMP) — the ability to run two radio stacks on one chip at once. Until now, that capability sat dormant: you commissioned a bulb into Zigbee (via a Hue Bridge) or into Matter-over-Thread (via Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, Alexa), and that choice was final until you factory-reset it.
The firmware update flips that. As Hue’s head of technology George Yianni explained to matter-smarthome, the bulbs “can use different channels for Zigbee and Thread and will be able to operate as routers in both networks concurrently.” Two channels, two meshes, one bulb, and it relays traffic for both.
Hueblog reported that the first eligible products are the Hue Essential range (GU10 and E27), current E27 bulbs, E14/E12 candle bulbs, and the Hue Slim recessed downlights, with more products joining around September 2026. HomeKit News noted that the point of keeping the Zigbee link alive is preserving the Hue-exclusive stuff — dynamic scenes, Hue Entertainment sync, the good automation engine — while still exposing the bulb natively to a Matter platform.
The asterisks nobody is printing on the box
Here’s where the enthusiasm needs tempering, because four caveats materially change who this helps.
1. Only mains-powered devices. Battery devices — the dimmer switches, the Hue motion sensors, the tap dials — are excluded. CMP costs power, and a coin-cell sensor can’t pay it. So your accessories stay firmly Zigbee-only and Bridge-bound.
2. Older bulbs are not invited. This is silicon-gated. If your bulb doesn’t have an MG26 or SiMG301 inside, no firmware will conjure a second radio stack. That means the 2019 colour bulbs in your living room are staying Zigbee forever. Check the generation before you get excited.
3. If it’s on a Hue Bridge, Thread gets disabled anyway. This is the one that surprised me most. Signify’s stated behaviour is that products registered to a Hue Bridge will have their Thread interface turned off, specifically to avoid the bulb appearing twice in a Matter ecosystem — once via the Bridge’s Matter bridging, once directly over Thread. Duplicate entities are a genuine mess, so the logic is sound. But it means the headline scenario most people imagined (“Bridge for scenes, Thread for Apple Home directness”) isn’t the default at all.
So what is the benefit for Bridge owners? Mesh. Your Hue bulbs can act as Thread routers, extending Thread coverage for your other Matter-over-Thread devices — the Aqara sensors, the smart locks, the blinds — without adding a single new device. In a home already carpeted with Hue, that’s a free Thread backbone.
4. The Hue Bridge Pro is still not a Thread border router. Signify was blunt: the Bridge Pro could technically act as one, but only on a single wireless channel, and there are no plans to enable it. It remains a Matter bridge, not a border router. So you still need an Apple TV 4K (the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model — the cheaper Wi-Fi-only variant of the 3rd-gen box has no Thread radio), a HomePod or HomePod mini, a Nest Hub, a SmartThings Station, or a Thread-capable router to have a Thread network at all. Why this matters more in an HDB than in a landed house overseas
Thread’s weakness in Singapore housing is not the protocol — it’s the architecture. HDB and older condo units are reinforced concrete with dense internal walls, and 2.4GHz mesh radios propagate through them poorly. A Thread network with three battery-powered sensors and one border router at the TV console is a network with almost no routers in it, because battery Thread devices are end devices — they sleep, and they don’t relay for anyone.
The fix has always been the same: add mains-powered Thread routers. Smart plugs, wired switches, downlights. We wrote a whole piece on building a bulletproof Matter mesh through HDB concrete, and every solution in it boils down to “put more powered routers on the walls and ceiling.”
Ceiling lighting is the ideal place for them. Lights are mains-powered, always on standby, physically high up (fewer furniture obstructions), and distributed one-per-room by definition. A four-room BTO with Hue downlights in every ceiling is, once this update lands, a four-room BTO with a Thread router in every ceiling. That is a materially better mesh than anything you’d build by scattering smart plugs at skirting-board height.
The catch, again: only if those lights aren’t registered to a Hue Bridge, or only after Signify clarifies whether Bridge-registered bulbs still route Thread while having their Thread endpoint disabled. Those are different things — routing traffic versus exposing a controllable device — and the current messaging doesn’t cleanly separate them. I’d wait for the actual firmware release notes before rebuilding your topology around it.
The Essential range changes the maths
There’s a second thing worth noting here, because it lands at the same time and compounds.
Hue’s Essential lineup is the company’s answer to being undercut by everyone. It’s on the Singapore Hue site now: the Essential GU10 at 345 lumens / 4.4W, the Essential A60 E27 at 806 lumens / 7.5W, in singles, 2-packs, and a 4-bulb E27 starter kit. In Europe these launched at €24.99 for a single bulb and €59.99 for a four-pack; in the US, $25 and $60. Signify hasn’t published SGD list pricing on the SG site, so check your retailer — but the delta versus the flagship range is real. For reference, Singapore retailer Threecubes lists the standard E27 White & Colour Ambiance at S$85 and the White Ambiance at S$49, with the classic Hue Bridge at S$89.
What do you give up? Less than you’d fear: Essential bulbs cover a narrower white range (2,200–6,500K, against the much wider spread the flagship White & Colour Ambiance bulbs advertise), don’t dim as far at the bottom end, and are less accurate on colour. For an accent lamp or an entertainment sync setup, that gap is visible. For a hallway, a bedroom ceiling, or a store-room spot — which is to say, most of the bulbs in a flat — it is not.
And critically, the Essential range is one of the CMP-equipped families. So the cheapest Hue bulbs are also the Thread-capable ones. That’s an unusual and welcome inversion.

So should you buy Hue in 2026?
My honest read, with Singapore conditions in mind:
Buy Hue if you want lighting that just works and you’re willing to pay for it, you care about Hue Entertainment or dynamic scenes, or you already have a Bridge and are extending an existing system. The Zigbee foundation is still the most reliable consumer lighting mesh you can buy, and Signify has been explicit that Zigbee stays primary — Yianni’s stated reason is that “Thread overhead is higher,” which would compromise the low-latency Entertainment sync. That’s a candid engineering answer, not marketing.
Don’t buy Hue because of Thread — not yet. The firmware isn’t out. The Bridge-disables-Thread behaviour undercuts the most-wanted use case. And the border router still has to come from somewhere else.
Do factor it in if you’re renovating. If you’re specifying ceiling lighting for a BTO or a resale reno right now, Thread-capable mains lighting is genuinely a future-proofing argument, in a way that “it’s smart” hasn’t been for years. The uncomfortable truth is that Hue has spent ten years telling us the Bridge was the answer, and is now shipping the hardware that makes the Bridge optional — while carefully arranging the software so that it isn’t, quite. It’s a rational commercial position. It’s also why I’d hold off on rearchitecting anything until the firmware actually ships and someone has tested what a Bridge-registered Essential bulb does to a real Thread mesh.
Watch for the release notes. Then decide.
